Search Engines
Without search engines, it would be impossible to be able to take advantage of the many opportunities offered by the internet. It is true that ever since the internet debuted, it has been much easier to apply for a job, shop, or book for a flight. But without search engines, only a few – specifically those who are willing to surf the internet the whole day just to look for sites that can accommodate their 'specific' needs - would appreciate the extent of the convenience this medium offers.
Basically, a search engine is an online directory. It allows surfers to search for any topic and displays the results of that search in the form of a list. The result is a mix of individual web pages, images, videos and files. When you search for a job using search engines for instance, you will not only receive websites that offer job openings. You will also most likely get links on videos and files that provide tips on acing a job interview, among others.
Search engines employ certain methods to rank results. But basically, they prioritize web pages and files that came from more “authoritative” sources. Although there are virtually millions of web pages that carry a particular word or phrase that may appear on a search, only a few are relevant and trustable.
